Climate and Health for Healthcare Professionals on Coursera

Not long after PlanetLab PI Prof Brian G McAdoo arrived at Duke University, he was approached by Prof AnnMarie Walton of the Duke School of Nursing to help develop a course on Climate and Health for Healthcare professionals.

Dr. Walton’s vision for the course is to have every student at the Duke University Health System (Nursing, Medicine, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician’s Assistant and Pharmacy schools) exposed to how a changing climate will be impacting their work and how their work impacts the climate. Walton and McAdoo spent the next year developing the course with colleagues from the Medicine, PT, OT, and PA schools.

“Climate and Health for Healthcare Professionals” was run as a pilot during the 2023-2024 academic year, and launched in April 2025 as part of a Coursera series called “Healthcare Leadership for Climate Change.” This is exactly the kind of interdisciplinary collaboration that is necessary to arrive at more sustainable solutions to the impacts of climate disruption.
