Joanna Nowakowska

Master of Engineering, Risk Engineering (Pratt School) and

Environment and Population Health

Joanna is a second-year graduate student in the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke. She is majoring in Risk Engineering with a concentration in Environment and Population Health.

With an undergraduate background in Medical Physics from the University of Warsaw (Poland) and Engineering from Southern Arkansas University, she combines her previous experiences to specialize in human health data analysis. Over the past year, she has been working in PlanetLab to identify and quantify extreme temperature events within the southeastern US. She has also been involved in the Xenon lab at the Radiology Department at Duke Hospital, where she analyzes hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI scans to identify pulmonary diseases. In the future, Joanna aims to work with human health data and contribute to mitigating losses from public health crises.

Apart from her academic pursuits, Joanna is an active tennis and padel player. She enjoys playing and teaching whenever she has some free time!
